student stuff

not really january 2001. here is where i post notes/drawings/gifts from students.

student artwork

kanisha from my memory tera class drew this on the board last week :)

drawings

winter 2008: i come into work sometimes w/my hair wrapped. an elementary student started drawing me but i didnt know. when he was almost done, i took the wrap off, so he drew another picture.

drawing

winter 2008. this birdie listening class is one of my favorites. one of students is peter, a former student of mine i had at least two terms ago. peter's prior class with me was elementary school and i often used the word "naughty" to admonish them when they would get out of hand. peter didnt forget.

student projects

summer 2011: from one of my april classes. we read an article about military objects so the project was to create a new object for a soldier. i have no idea why i am in this drawing...

drawing

same student, same piece of paper. i wore eyeliner that day and the girls were fascinated.

student projects

summer 2011: this drawing is by Johnson in seed 2 (i gave him his english name; i love last names as first names). we had read an article about 911, so the project was to think of a situation where you would need to call them.

drawing

winter term 2008. i walked into class one day to this on the board, the kids got all shakey telling me to read the "special news." i think the story goes that a my fellow teacher andrew came into my class, said he wanted to be their teacher, and was going to fight me for it. the kids were absolutely giddy. excuse the patchy looking photo, i couldnt get it all in one shot, so i took two and pasted.
i dont remember which class drew this, but it was on the board after i came back from break time. they probably were begging me to play hang man and i said no as i always do. it's always followed by, "ahhh, teacher, you are bad!"

drawing

02/09 middle school ILP student Julie drew this on the back of her quiz. to explain the "very important drawing" she wrote on the paper: each class we have a list of like 100 vocabulary words, to which i begin review with "Class, let's go over some very important vocabulary words," meaning that only the words i review in class will be on the test. and yet some kids STILL give me B's and C's... the student who did this drawing included, actually. >:(
1.2010 jack from sprout 3, april sabon

student projects

spring 2011 elementary seed 1 students paired up to make a poster about what friends do. This one says, "Friends help with homework." and by "help," i guess it means "verbal abuse." ^^
spring 2011: from sapling 2 student stephanie.

student notes

spring 2011. a lovely note from sapling 2 student jessica.

student gifts

this bracelet is from elementary giga student Saint. this was my favorite class ever, i adored every single student, i loved them all. (this was my 4th or 5th term? i feel like that was my best teaching term, i was really settled at work and felt like i knew what i was doing). i think saint went on vacation with his family, and brought this back for me. most of the time, a student will say that their mother told them to give suchandsuch to you, but this was a little different. i remember when i came into class, the other boys around him were nudging him, wanting him to come up and give the gift to me. saint did, and kept his eyes down, not saying a word. it was adorable. i think i wore it twice that term, so he could see me wearing it. now its hanging on my door. i loved saint, so smart and cute w/his crackly voice; when he's 30, i'll come back to find and marry him.

student projects

spring 2011 elementary school students DoYeon and SeungAh teamed up for ctp assignment: how do you make a ghost leave your house. they wrote that they would befriend the ghost, invite it to play outside, and then run back into the house and lock the doors. so awesome. i gave them a triple A+.

drawing

feb 2009: last day of class birdie middle school
girls drawing to the left, same drawing on the right after the boys' alterations.

student gifts

i feel like a real jerk for not remembering when i got these/who gave these to me and what for. i know it was a female student. they're charms for cell phones, she gave me a pair, one for me and one for my husband, she told me. aaahhh.... shit, who did i get these from? im the worst teacher ever. >:(

student gifts

fall term 2008. this is from mary, somewhere in the middle of the term, she gave me this cell phone accessory. i dont know what it is, i think for some business... i put it on my phone for the rest of the term, then took off.

student drawings

fall 2011 sprout 3 student sara left this for me on the board yesterday. :)

student gifts

winter 2008 this is liz, a top student, i have the fortune of having her in my class for the third time this term (uh, not the same class 3x, i mean, she keeps 'leveling up' in classes). she doesnt go to public school, she's home schooled and really disciplined: always has all her homework finished, gets As on every test; she seems to understand the value to doing something for the sake of learning rather than for credit or bonus points. She wasnt in class for two weeks, she'd traveled to...i think.. Vietnam? To do volunteer work of some sort. Last time i had her in my class, i think she did something similar, but went to cambodia? Watch out for this girl, she's going to be something special, i tell ya! she brought me these chocolate cocktail cremes when she returned from her trip. Woo, these were POTENT! i ate one in class, and made all kinds of faces, the kids laughed and asked if i was drunk.

student gifts

this is from Liz, she brought this back from her trip to... cambodia? she was there for two weeks doing volunteer work, i think working in a children's home, im not sure. i remember she was in MT at the time, we were reading a kiddy version of hamlet, and liz had some really poetic insights/interpretations to some of the dialogue. i love this girl, she's gonna gonna do big things.

student etc

12/09 we had a lame contest where students wrote a speech about who is the best teacher at cdi. i didnt like it, b/c we were supposed to stress that they write about their current teacher, and for this class in particular, i was their only teacher. i mentioned it in class, stressed that it was optional, and left it at that. but 3 of my elementary students did it anyway (awwwww...) this is julia's speech, with my edits for grammar and spelling. She concluded her speech with something like, "Teacher says so many to us. So, she drinks juice and water so much. After our class is finished and part with Sha, I want to give 100 bottom of juice to her. I like and love her like that." :) she meant "bottles," not "bottom." Hence the drawings at the bottom of the paper: i was trying to clarify what she meant.
..

drawings

fall 2010
a couple of drawings from t/th sprout 2. i think the first one with the "this" caption was by shina, who is like the friggin cutest little girl ever.

student etc

12/09 this is another "best teacher essay" written by elementary student tom. im never sure how old the students are (korean age is one to two years older than american age, and sometimes when you ask the younger kids how old they are, they say they dont know:?) but tom is cute and wears glasses and has a raspy voice like The Other Joseph. he wrote about how my kindness is good for his health <3 In one part describing my face, he writes, "Everyone says face is funny. i know. because teacher is doesnt face have a angry. so she is always have a funny she face." the highlighed part in the middle i couldnt understand, and after trying to explain it to me three time, tom decided, "Teacher, just cut." I'm sorry sweetheart! i was trying really hard to understand what you were saying! :*)

.

student drawings

01/09 my mf elementary class drew this on the board last week.
looks like im in need of a haircut.

student gifts

winter term 2007: my first term teaching, middle school mm student amy gave this to me for no reason. i hooked it on my phone for the remainder of the term, and then took it off when we started a new term and she had a new teacher. it's hanging on my door. amy has big dark eyes, like this doll.

student etc

12/09 another "best teacher essay" written by elementary student Sue. i like how she writes, "Not a everyone (agrees) but i think my teacher is the best." Sue finshes off with, "Also, she gives a prize when we memorise the summarys." Ok, to explain this: the kids have an option to memorize a paragraph for bonus points on the test. In this class, so many students do it that i give a prize of stickers for the 3 students who do it the fastest, therefore making all the students try to do it quickly. its a time management tool as well as a great motivator!

student artwork

this is by agnes (tho she insisted it be pronounced "awnes") in my middle school bridge listening... (or was it par?), she drew this on her test. i dont know why she was scared, she always got grades of A and A+, i dont think she ever got below an A-. her english and comprehension of the class material was friggin amazing, especially juxtaposed with her heavy korean accent. i had nothing to do with how smart she is, this was during my first or second term teaching.

notes

during the 11 weeks i had no visa and couldnt work, i spent a lot of time in random cafes in my neighborhood, knitting. i was at coffe&cubi and the only other people there were these two boys at the other end of room, papers and books on the table, & i heard them speaking bits of english. well, not boys, they were young men, but anyway, i said hello and i can help in any way if i could. turned out they lived like a street over from me, their names were Bob & Alex, tho eventually they came to be referred to as "HandsomeBob" and "HandsomeAlex" amongst my friends. both are gone now, bob back to university, alex went to australia. they became wonderful friends, i could go on and on about all the things they've helped me with. on alex's last day, he left me this note. i didnt cry but i came close. T T

science

not one of mine, i got this is from an email sent to me from a fellow teacher :)

student artwork

i think the girl who drew this on her test was... constance? not sure. she was in my class for one day, doing a make up lesson. i made a copy of it b/c it's so strange, the word bubble just has a question mark in it, and the writing says, "your pain is my happiness."

student artwork

brian from elementary mm drew this (from the cover of the book we were reading) and gave this to me. notice he spelled his name, "Brain." <3 i loved brian, he was the smallest little boy in the class and so cute. his english was really spot on. he didnt stay in my class, he left cdi :( i wished i couldve said goodbye, he was my favorite.

student notes

michelle in elementary bridge listening gave me a pen in this envelope. i think she's in eagle level now, super smart little girl! this gift was from a while ago... maybe during my second term teaching? i was an ok teacher back then, b/c boi, so much i didnt know, so much f**ing up. but sweet michelle loved me anyway. not sure if this will enlarge. it says, "to sister sha, thank you very much you are very good teacher for me. from michelle. i love you, you are good teacher for everyone. forever. i think i will miss you if im level up."

student artwork

11/19/2008 jason from elementary mg drew this on the board yesterday. i dont know why i took a picture, it's just cute and i really like him, i wanted him to see that i was paying attention to him.
1.2012 the cork board above my desk in my cdi sanbon classroom.

  1. a little hook i hang the chart that shows which students have been completing their hw
  2. a little doodle of me by memory student little judy.
  3. a thumbnail for the ctp art project. it's me as a dixie cup person that the student titled, "little sha."
  4. a drawing of me by student Potter.
  5. i don't know which student drew this, but like it.

  7. my reminder note of how many cdi sanbon reward stamps students get.
  8. a series of drawings by talented YongGee, who falls asleep in class everyday.

student drawing

march 31st, 2010 a drawing of me by smart and wonderful ashley.
01.2012 a student from a sprout class drew this picture of me after she finished her dialogue exercise. look at how long and glamorous my neck looks! she must look at her round rolly polly teacher with a lot of love!

student drawing

march 31 2010 elementary student michael did this drawing of me on the board. then i guess jenny felt sorry for how i was portrayed, and did her drawing of me next to his.

student artwork

12/06/08 nerdy cute little steven from mega drew this onthe board last week. am i weariing headphones? i have no idea why im punching out a dinosaur. notice the little girl to the rt in the doorway. i showed her friends in the class that i accidently caught her in the picture and they went nuts. Steven is new to the class, but the kids are nice to him, and were super awed when they saw his drawing skills. im glad, b/c i hate when kids dont get along w/a "new kid." the second day of class, he got an inexplicable nose bleed and after he got back fm the bathroom, the kids asked w/genuine concern, "Kinchanayo?" which means, "are you ok?" it was really sweet... i love this class. i always say taht, but i do.

ctp notes

fall 2009: this is from one of my girls in an elementary MT class. at the end of each class, the students give presentations, and the others must take notes and prepare questions/comments/critiques. it gets tedious, hence the creativity in notetaking.

student gifts

11/20/08 today was the last day of a middle school mg class... ok i have to confess that this term i did something i have never done before: at least 3 times this term, i bought dokbokki for the class. i dont believe in giving students gifts or presents ever, not even on the last school day, but those few times i was hella hungry, so i shelled out 4,ooo won so each student could get an obecwon's worth of dokbokki. before i gave them money, the ritual was this:

me: "class, does sister sha think it's ok for teachers to give students money or presents?"
class: "noooooo."
me: "Then why am i buying you dokbokki today?"
class: "because YOURE hungry."
me: "Thats right. i dont care about being nice to you, i only care about being fair. if i eat in class, then you ahve to be allowed to eat too. now take this money and go buy me a dokbokki."

so yesterday was the last day of class and of course i gave them nothing, i bought them nothing, i said "absolutely not" to their requests for a party, and i made them do every page in the workbook. and during the last break time on this last class day, THEY bought ME dokbokki. *sniffle*. the kids are so great sometimes!!!

student artwork

this is from lydia in mg, nov 2008. this was a really fast class, the kids were firecrackers, always finishing work early. i would say, "let's go over answers in 10 min," but most would finish in 5. i'd tell them that if they finished early, they could work on chunkbooks or homework, but most of the time, they'd just draw... which was fine w/me, b/c they always had all homework finished by next class.

elephant

not one of mine, this is from an email sent to me from a fellow teacher.
i'd be tempted to give half credit on this one...
